1909
Mary Spencer Edwards was an artist who trained at the Slade School of Art. She married the portrait painter Ambrose McEvoy, one of US-born Epstein’s first supporter in England. Here, Epstein captures her in a serene pose and uses an expressive, naturalistic style often seen in early Renaissance busts. Her family recalls that McEvoy sat for the bust in candlelight because of an electricity failure.
