1970s (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This garment is part of a range of childrenswear from the 1970s.
These clothes were all dead stock from a childrenswear shop which shut down around the end of the 1970s. Many of the clothes were made in the far east and were imported for sale in the UK. All the garments are unworn, and many retain the brand tags and labels they were initially sold with and give us a valuable snapshot of the styles and fashions that were available to both girls and boys of different ages during this period.

Brief description
Sun dress for a girl aged 2-3 years, large floral print synthetic in white, blue and orange with a halter neck, probably made in England, 1970s.
Physical description
A-line sun dress with a halter neck. The dress is made from a thick synthetic fabric of printed flowers and leaves. The fabric has a white and navy blue ground with flowers in light and navy blue and leaves in beige and yellow. The bodice of the dress has a shaped bust with a band in the centre to gather the pleats - it resembles a bikini top. The halter neck straps are 3cms wide and, along with the bodice section of the dress, are double thickness. The dress flares out under the bust line into a A-line shape skirt. There are no fastenings on the dress but the back has a low back line which is gathered by the use of a wide piece of elastic in the hem allowing it to be easily stretched to get on and off a child.
Dimensions
  • Flat under the bust line width: 27cm
  • Centre of v neck to bottom hem length: 48cm

Object history
This dress, along with numbers B.220-2011 to B.239-2011, are all from the same batch of dead shop stock from a childrenswear shop that shut down in the late 1970s. As a result all of the items in this lot are in mint condition, many still have their shop labels attached. All items were purchased via a house clearance company.
