Dress

1970s (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This garment is part of a range of childrenswear from the 1970s.
These clothes were all dead stock from a childrenswear shop which shut down around the end of the 1970s. Many of the clothes were made in the far east and were imported for sale in the UK. All the garments are unworn, and many retain the brand tags and labels they were initially sold with and give us a valuable snapshot of the styles and fashions that were available to both girls and boys of different ages during this period.

Brief description
Girl's dress, cream cotton floral print dress with long sleeves and a high neck and flared skirt, size 18 months, made in England, 1970s.
Physical description
Cream coloured cotton dress for a girl of 18 months old. The dress is made from a cream cotton printed with a repeating floral pattern, with white lines for flower stems and stylised grey coloured flowers, resembling daisies. From a distance, the printed pattern gives the effect of the broderie anglaise technique. The dress has a high round neckline and fastens at the back using a metal zip. The sleeves are full length with an elasticised cuff sewn 2cms in to create a ruffled sleeve end. The dress bodice is fitted with two tucks at the front and at the back. At the waist the dress flares to a full skirt. The dress is short and would fall at about mid thigh length on a baby.

Object history
This dress, along with numbers B.220-2011 to B.239-2011, are all from the same batch of dead shop stock from a childrenswear shop that shut down in the late 1970s. As a result all of the items in this lot are in mint condition, many still have their shop labels attached. All items were purchased via a house clearance company.
