Metal locomotive and tender, The Flying Scotsman, in original box made in England By Bassett Lowke in the 1930s

Model locomotive and tender, metal, painted mostly in green, in a pale green card box.

The locomotive is painted dark green with black detailing and black wheels with silver on the outside. There are six larger wheels and four small wheels that are connected to the train on a board attached to a spring. There are also two smaller, completely black, wheels at the rear of the train. The bumper at the front of the train is bright red, and both ends have hooks to connect the locomotive to other components.

The tender is also painted dark green, with a black top and gold coloured bumpers. There is also a paper concertina on the back of the model, presumably to stop collisions with other vehicles. There is a pin attached to the front to attach it to other vehicles.

The exterior of the box is pale green, with some markings indicating wear. The interior of the box is ochre in colour. The box is rectangular in shape. The box lid is missing one of its sides, and is severely discoloured, probably because of light. There are two half circles cut into two of the sides to assist with removing the lid.

This locomotive, tender and original box was sold to the Museum by Dennis Moye. It was given to Dennis in the 1930s as either a Christmas or Birthday present, probably bought at Gamages toy shop, Holborn. It had limited use before Dennis was evacuated from London in 1939, at which point the toy was boxed at put into the attic. On his return to London, Dennis had outgrown his trains, so they remained in storage.

'The Flying Scotsman' has been described as one of the finest examples of trains produced in the 'Nuremberg' style.

This train, 'The Flying Scotsman', is from the 1930s and was played with for a limited time before it was put into storage while its owner was evacuated. It has been described as one of the finest trains produced in the 'Nuremberg' style.
