Puppet of Sli-Mee, a Mandarin, for the show The Feast of Lanterns. This puppet is part of a fine set designed by Elizabeth Waghorn and carved by Beverley Coleclough and Nicola Howard-Jones. The Feast of Lanterns, written and directed by Richard Gill, toured widely for Polka in 1968-1969 and was one of the first plays to mix actors and puppets. The figures are carved in Jelutong.

Physical description

Hands, arms, head and neck in carved wood, painted in green. Applied hair on each side of the face, made of synthetic string, and applied moustache. Hat in black velveteen fabric, with gold finishing. Wearing a red dress enriched with black beads and black painted decorations. Sleeves are finished with black velveteen, and a black velveteen stripe is sewn at the front of the dress. Also wearing a black velveteen collar with small golden bells.
