About 1500
The Greek god Apollo represented the ideal male beauty, though he was often depicted, as here, with effeminate features. The snake alludes to his killing of a python, as described by the Roman poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses. The cross-legged stance and tree-trunk support are derived from classical marble sculpture.
