Boldly, the designers of Izzy (short for Whatizit?) rejected local animals or national symbols in favour of a computer-generated character with no existing associations, saying 'we wanted to do something unexpected'.

After focus-group testing, designers added eyelids, teeth and a nose, and Izzy became more like the cute animals of previous years.
