Tinplate Sheet Set

mid 20th century (manufactured)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This is a set of pre-assembly tinplate sheets, printed with the designs for novelty toys. This is the first state in making tin toys, before cutting, pressing and assembling, usually with internal mechanical parts, into the tin toys that have been sold throughout the 20th century. These designs - parts for a motorcyclist, carousel and a crocodile - were printed in Germany, the capital of tinplate toys in the late 19th to early 20th century. They bear the slogan 'MADE IN WESTERN GERMANY', which tells us they were made after the Second World War, when Germany was split into East and West. By this point, Japan and China had taken over as the world's major manufacturers of tinplate toys.
