Blossom with birds

Print
2011 (printed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Robin Duttson takes his inspiration from the techniques and materials used in German and Italian Baroque art. His delicate drawings and prints are part of a larger plan to sculpturally recreate an entire apple tree. Every year he sets up a temporary studio in an orchard to draw the short-lived blossoms, capturing the details needed to inform his work throughout the year. 'Blossom with Birds' is a colour lithograph made up of four parts and was produced as part of this project. Printed in delicate colours, this and his other prints of this subject, reference Japanese woodblock prints of birds and flowers, but with a rigorous sense of scientific naturalism. This print was an ambitious undertaking, requiring 48 hand-drawn colour separations. Robin Duttson worked with Michael Papworth at Curwen Press and together they spent seventeen full days proofing the four parts of the work.
