Key Ring

ca. 1968 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This keyring was possibly a souvenir from the Olympic Games held in Mexico City in 1968. It depicts an eagle, a symbol of Mexico, in the red, green and white of the Mexican flag. Standing triumphantly, the eagle wears the Olympic rings like a medal around its neck.

Mexico 1968 did not have an official mascot, but had several animals unofficially associated with the Games, including a Red Jaguar 'El Tigre Rojo de Chichen-Itza', and the Dove of Peace. The first official Olympic mascot, a dachshund called Waldi, appeared at the 1972 Summer games in Munich.
