This fashion illustration by Hiroshi Tanabe depicts a woman wearing a pleated collar which was designed by Issey Miyake in 1982. Tanabe drew the collar using black pen on paper before photocopying the image onto the final paper and applying silver leaf. He then drew in areas of the collar and the female face using black pen and pencil.

Tanabe, who was born in Kanagawa, Japan, is inspired by traditional Japanese woodcuts. He has produced fashion illustrations for a wide range of newspapers and magazines including The New York Times Magazine, British Vogue and Vogue Paris, and Harper's Bazaar.

Physical description

An illustration depicting a head of a woman who is wearing a pleated collar; the collar was drawn using black pen on paper before being photocopied onto the final paper and silver leaf was applied. Areas of the collar are drawn using black ink and shaded in with pencil. The woman's head is drawn using black pen and pencil. There is a tracing paper overlay which is attached to the back of the white paper along one edge using paper tape. An outline of the head and collar is drawn on the tracing paper using coloured pencil crayon. Although the tracing paper is attached, the designer does not consider it part of the artwork.
