This fashion illustration by Hiroshi Tanabe depicts a butterfly headdress which was designed by Philip Treacy for the Alexander McQueen 2009 Ready to Wear collection. Tanabe drew the butterflies using black pen on paper before photocopying them onto the final paper and applying silver leaf. He drew in areas of the headdress using black pen and pink pencil crayon.

Tanabe, who was born in Kanagawa, Japan, is inspired by traditional Japanese woodcuts. He has produced fashion illustrations for a wide range of newspapers and magazines including The New York Times Magazine, British Vogue and Vogue Paris, and Harper's Bazaar.

Physical description

An illustration depicting a head of a woman who is wearing a butterfly headdress; the butterflies were drawn using black pen on paper before being photocopied onto the final white paper and silver leaf was applied, areas are also drawn using black ink and shaded in with pink pencil crayon. The woman's hair, nose and mouth are drawn using black pen and pencil. There is a tracing paper overlay which is attached to the back of the white paper along one edge using paper tape. An outline of the head and headdress is drawn on the tracing paper using coloured pencil crayon. Although the tracing paper is attached, the designer does not consider it part of the artwork.
