This fashion illustration by Hiroshi Tanabe depicts a feather headdress which was designed by Philip Treacy for the Alexander McQueen 2006 Ready to Wear fashion collection. Tanabe produced a pen drawing of the feathers which were then photocopied onto the final paper. He used an iron to apply gold leaf to the photocopied drawing and then drew in areas of the headdress using black pen and white pencil crayon.

Tanabe, who was born in Kanagawa, Japan, is inspired by traditional Japanese woodcuts. He has produced fashion illustrations for a wide range of newspapers and magazines including The New York Times Magazine, British Vogue and Vogue Paris, and Harper's Bazaar.

Physical description

An illustration of a feather headdress on black paper; the feathers were drawn using black pen on paper before being photocopied on to the final paper and gold leaf was applied. Areas of the feathers are drawn using black ink and the base of the headdress is drawn using white pencil crayon. There is a protective tracing paper overlay which is attached to the back of the black paper along the upper edge using paper tape. An outline of the headdress is drawn on the tracing paper using coloured pencil crayon. Although the tracing paper is attached, the designer does not consider it part of the artwork.
