Object history | The King mentioned on the plaque would have been Ba-gyi-daw (Sagaing Min) (r.1819-37), whose capital was at Ava from 1823-27. The object was presented by the King of Burma to Dr. Wallich (the donor's father) in 1826. |
Historical context | An inscribed gold plaque such as this was a form of medal or honour presented by the King to Royalty, High Officials or in this case a visiting dignitary who had performed a noteworthy service. Red ribbons attached to the ends of plaques allowed the decoration to be tied around the official's forehead when entering the king's presence. |
Production | Attribution note: Translation of the Burmese inscription: "Order and decoration conferred by His Golden Footed Majesty, the King of Burma, at Ava, on Dr. Wallich, on the December 1826". Reason For Production: Commission |
