On their way out of the museum, Clara, Ollie and their mother walk through the Sculpture gallery where they can admire statues of mythological and allegorical subjects. Such statues, often displayed indoors, became increasingly popular with British sculptors and patrons from the 1770s onwards.(10/09/2013)

Historical context
Emily Sutton was born in Yorkshire and graduated with a B.A (Hons.) in Illustration from Edinburgh College of Art in 2008. She also studied at York College and Rhode Island School of Design. The artist specialises in illustration of children’s books and draws her inspiration from such 20th century illustrators such as Edward Bawden (1903- 1989) and Eric Ravilious (1903- 1942) and American lithographed children's books. She typically includes in her work objects found in museums and antique shops.

This illustration is characteristic of Emily Sutton’s style and technique with a strong use of line, colour and pattern. The image is of Clara Button, her mother and brother walking past statues on plinths in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The illustration was not used in the final printed book.
