Gallery label
Ollie's attention is drawn to Tipu's Tiger, an extraordinary automaton that can simulate the growls of the animal and the cries of his victim, a British soldier. This was made for Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore in South India from 1782 to 1799. Tipu fought fierce battles against the British and his story captured the popular imagination in Britain far into the 19th century. (10/09/2013)
