Gallery label | This ballgown, originally made-to-measure for the Countess of Ross, is a light-hearted but striking example of British couture. In a not uncommon gesture of 'handing on' gowns from one wardrobe to another, the Countess gave this gown to her cousin's daughter, Muriel Campbell. Muriel wore it to a 1966 ball in honour of Princess Margaret's wedding.
After Muriel Campbell's own marriage in 1963, her mother-in-law, the Countess of Southesk, invited the couple to several balls in Scotland. For these, occasions, Muriel accessorised this dress with the Campbell blue and green sash and with green satin shoes - low-heeled for dancing reels.(25/07/2012) |
