Uttam Chitrakar references both old and new traditions in his Kalighat paintings, taking inspiration from religious subject matter. This figure of Durga recalls those of Indian artist Jamini Roy. The facial features are highly stylised and symmetrical, while the shapes of the lion and water-buffalo are created from minimal bold lines.

Physical description | This rectangular painting shows Durga as the central figure seated on a lion, spearing the demon Mahishasura who is hiding in the buffalo below her. The faces of the figures are heavily stylised; Durga is drawn with slanted almond shaped eyes and a very symmetrical body with ten arms. The use of colour is bold and shows a predominance of red, blue, green and yellow. There is evidence of shading to indicate volume on the exposed skin parts of the Durga figure. |
