Madame Giradelli is described in Henry Morley's 1858 book Memoirs of Bartholomew Fair as 'A famous person in the Fair before and after the year 1814', who 'put lead in her mouth, and spat it out marked with her teeth, passed red-hot irons over her body and limbs, thrust her arms into fire, washed her hands, not only in boiling oil, but also in boiling oil and aquafortis.'
