The winner of the Young Designer Silversmith Award in 2011 was Shaun Grace This annual competition, organised by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, began in 1994. It is open to any student under 30 in the United Kingdom on an undergraduate or postgraduate degree course or equivalent. The winner makes a commission for a museum collection in a leading workshop. The award is part of the Company's objective to promote excellence of design combined with dexterity of craftsmanship.

The design brief for 2011 was for two vases that would interact with each other and display a particular species of flower. Shaun Grace is a recent graduate of the University of the Creative Arts in Rochester, Kent. He made the vases under the expert eye of Steven Ottewill and his team in his workshop in Ashford, Kent.

Physical description

One of a pair of flower vases, fabricated from sheet silver, the side walls, L shaped, the base plate, top plates and front wall curved. The top lid, an oblong sheet of silver and with a locating flange beneath, removable, to allow water to be added to the vessel. Two pairs of circular collars penetrate the top and the base to accommodate two single flower stems.
