Artist/Maker

This illustration shows the initial workings for a scene on the borders of Esthwaite Water where Sir Isaac Newton, a newt, and Mr. Alderman Ptolemy, a tortoise, arrive for dinner at Mr. Jeremy Fisher’s house. The sketch is very similar to the final illustration on p. 52 of The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, but in this initial sketch the scene is shown from a more distant perspective.

Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three original Peter Rabbit books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.
