Gallery label
'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900' The Grand Staircase at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, is hung with four allegorical paintings of the continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The latter two are identical in every detail with the tapestries of Africa and America shown here, except that they are in reverse, like cartoons for low-warp tapestry weaving. Unfortunately the paintings are unattributed and no-one knows even their date of acquisition.(1987-2006)
Object history
From a set of continents. Identical with one of the four allegorical paintings in the Grand Staircase at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The paintings are unattributed.
