Edmund John Niemann (1813-1876) initially worked as a clerk at Lloyds before giving this up to become an artist. He is known for painting particularly large landscapes, often depicting river scenes. During his lifetime he exhibited 29 works at the Royal Academy, 45 at the British Institute and 40 at the Society of British Artists. This particular painting is not identifiable with the title of any exhibited picture.
