Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This cast bronze relief plaquette entiteld 'Moon Cow' is made by Ron Dutton in Britain in 1984.
Moon Cow (1984), in which the back of the cow merges into the nightly landscape, has both sculptural and pictorial qualities. In the introduction to Ron Dutton's 1999 solo exhibition at Simmons Gallery, Mark Jones described this piece: 'Moon Cow, though emphatically sculptural in its strong and delineated forms, simply and masterfully modelled, transports us into a moment once commonplace - a cow in a field - and yet imbued with mystery'.
Ron Dutton started making medals in 1974 when, he says, it 'became a focus of expression that has offered stimulating and challenging opportunities I am grateful to have found' (cit. the artist's website). His principal source of inspiration is the British landscape in which he spends hours walking, often sculpting on the spot. With 'Stream Trees' (1977) he captured the scene in a slab of wax before giving it permanent form in bronze, with a subtle play of textures and a golden finish.
