Rocky landscape with river and sheep

Oil Painting
ca. 1840 (painted)
Artist/Maker

Henry Dawson exhibited landscapes throughout his lifetime at the Royal Academy, but always complained, apparently with some reason, that his work was badly hung. He found a friend in the painter James Orrock, who acted as both patron and sales agent. Dawson painted four pictures for Orrock beginning in 1857, but none of the titles are identifiable with this painting. Indeed, although this painting is undated, its similarity to an 1840 landscape (1857-1900) would suggest that it was painted around the same time.
