This portrait head is by Ivan Meštrović, one of the leading Croatian artists of the twentieth century. Its subject, Sir Eric Maclagan, was Keeper of Sculpture and a Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Meštrović had two long stays in England, and the portrait was probably made on his second visit in 1919 when he made a number of busts and figures of friends and celebrated contemporaries. Meštrović and Maclagan had become close friends in 1915 when the latter organised a major show of his sculpture at the V&A. The Head was owned by Maclagan.

Object history
This portrait of the former Keeper of Sculpture and Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum was probably executed in 1919 when Meštrović returned for a second stay in England. Meštrović and Maclagan worked together when Maclagan organised a major show of the sculptor's work at the V&A in 1915, and they became close friends.
