George Baxter (1804-67) patented the Baxter process in 1835. The technique combined the relief and intaglio printing methods. The foundation plate, which printed main features of the design, was etched (often in this case through an aquatint ground) or stipple engraved, and oil colours were superimposed from wood blocks.
