'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900' General Gerhard Johann David von Scharnhorst (1755-1857) was prominent in the 1806 to 1807 campaign against Napoleon, and subsequently headed the commission to reform the Prussian military system. Rauch was regarded as the greatest German sculptor after Schadow. Scharnhorst is shown in contemporary dress but with a cape draped Roman-style in the heroic manner. Several portraits of his Prussian allies were commissioned by the Duke of Wellington. This figure and others represent the Berlin factory's contribution to their Olympian status.(1987-2006)
