George Romney was a prolific portrait painter. His sitters books for March 1776 - Dec 1795, the period in which this painting falls, records some 1500 sitters.

This portrait shows the sensitivity of feeling for which Romney is known. The delicate expression of the young man and the character of the tilted hat casting a shadow over the face encourage a degree of emotional engagement with the subject.
