Place of origin |
Ben Nicholson moved to Cornwall in 1939. Already an established painter, he became a central figure in the St Ives school, a loose association of artists living and working in the area, whose work was shaped in some way by the Cornish environment. Nicholson was then moving away from abstract subjects towards still life and landscape. This print combines both, with its elegant topography reducing the physical space to sparse, melancholy, almost abstract lines.
