The Architectural Museum at the South Kensington Museum

Plaster casts of architectural ornament were shown at the South Kensington Museum (the ancestor of the V&A) from its opening in 1857. The so-called Architectural Museum was set up in the gallery of the Iron Museum (nicknamed the Brompton Boilers), which now forms the building of the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood. The Museum contained casts of medieval architecture from the Royal Architectural Museum to which were added casts from the Governement School of Design. Brass rubbings were hung from the roof.
