Also known as 'Old Jock', John Wilson was born in Ayr, Scotland but spent most of career in London where he painted, almost exclusively, coastal and river scenes.

This painting has not been identified with any of his exhibited works but it is a lively example of Wilson's painting style. The scene is full of energy and activity and probably depicts the unloading of a ship's cargo of textiles.

Physical description

Oil on canvas; coastal scene showing several dogs, horses and carts awaiting the unloading of ship's cargo. Around the ship are rowing boats. The centre scene shows a man on a white horse receiveing news from a man on foot, on the left a woman with fishing nets wades to shore and on the right a shepherd is driving sheep along the beach. In the right foreground, a gun and basket lean against a sand dune which has been shrewn with red cloth.
