Julius Caesar

Bust
19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This glazed porcelain bust was probably made in Italy for the tourist market. It represents the Roman military leader and statesman Julius Caesar (102BC-44BC). It formed part of the collection of theatrical memorabilia of the actor Robert Eddison and may have been collected for the possible theatrical connections with Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar. It is however unlikely that a theatrical reference was intended. The bust was probably sold as a souvenir in the 19th century.
