A veneeered chest of drawers of oak with a pine front, comprising two drawers on a stand with four short scroll legs with serpentine stretchers meeting at the centre. The top is inlaid with a herringbone banding border. The two drawers have brass keyhole escutcheons and brass drop handles with rosette-shaped back-plates; the drawers being surrounded by a bead. The whole rests on bun feet.
The veneer has a large patch that has been painted in. The grain of the drawer botton goes from front to back and is housed in rebates with runners on all four sides.

Object history | Notes from RP 18/2096, gift of Duke of Buccleuch from Boughton House, Kettering. Condition reported as: "Restored, one foot, handles and keyhole escutcheon added. In the museum" 5/7/18 Object Approval Form includes the chest among 10 gifts from the Duke of Buccleugh, Boughton House, Kettering "(3) Chest of Drawers period of William & Mary" amended to read "chest of 2 drawers on stand with scroll legs. Late 17th century". 5/7/18 Handwritten notes Cecil Smith condition note next to the no.3 (presumably related to "3" as above) "Handles, 1 Foot and other parts missing" 10/7/18 Letter Cecil Smith to the Duke notes in thanking him that the pieces will be worked on "by our skilled repairers….the necessary work…will occupy a considerable time". Smith encloses a list of the pieces including "(3) Chest of two drawers, on stand with scroll legs, late 17th century". |
