The figure in this painting has traditionally been called St Francis. It appears to have been drawn from a model, who was identified in the Art Journal, orbituary as the miniature painter Anthony Stewart (1773-1846). It may be compared with the 1812 portrait of him by Andrew Gedddes, now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and also with his miniature self portait in the V&A, Museum Number: P.2-1967.

Margaret Sarah Carpenter was a very popular portrait painter. Her husband's obituarist (William Hookham Carpenter) wrote that she 'would certainly have been a Royal Academician but for her sex' (Gentleman's Magazine September 1866, p410).
