Dutch artist Alexandra Englefriet’s practice ranges from sculptural pieces to performance-based land art. This piece, which was fired in a large trench kiln dug into the ground, shows a similarly rugged approach in its handling of clay.

Object history
According to the artist, the piece, which has no title, was made in November 2010 in Saint-Martin-de-Salencey in France. It is of stoneware clay and was wood-fired in her trench kiln there at about 1150 degrees C. It is one of only two pieces that came out of her newly finished trench kiln in one piece, and so represents her very first woodfired work.

The work was shown by Galerie Carla Koch at the PAN art fair in Amsterdam in November 2010.
