Vanity cases were made for wealthy men and women as a traveling convenience. This case, mounted in red leather and lined in lavender silk was probably made for use by a woman.
The contents consist of three circular metal boxes and covers, a soap container, a rectangular container lined with ceramic, two carved glass bottles, and an enamel backed bristle brush. The cover holds a mirror, a comb and a nail pick.
