  • The outline with underneath wash of / colour on the spot, gave up in August, / what work, marble variegated with Black & real porphry (sic) thrown away on a very debated style / J B Shadows at top of Lantern Bluish Grey / light strong reflected lights very strong / light on right especially on round tower very bright / almost white light coming in and touching projections and ground very bright / Shadows under lantern very warm - strong reflected light on left, shadows cast across / the pavement purple Blue sky White clouds / lower part of Lantern mossy and grey . / July 1853 (Notes inscribed in pencil on the back of the mount)
