Dress, one shouldered bodice and asymmetrical skirt with underskirt of gilded feathers, by Alexander McQueen, designed in London, AW 2010-2011

Labels and date

Alexander McQueen (1969–2010)
Autumn/Winter 2010

McQueen’s last collection combined his interest in history and fascination with the natural world. This dress is digitally printed with a pattern taken from a German altarpiece, while the underskirt is made from painted gold feathers. The asymmetry of the garment is balanced by a single, printed-silk gauntlet like the one in the painting. McQueen was succeeded in 2010 by Sarah Burton, who designed the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress.

Made in Italy
Digitally printed silk, after the Altarpiece of the Patron Saints of Cologne by Stephan Lochner (1400–52)
Duck feathers
