Object history
From Miller (1999), p.120-121:
The lettering on the title plate RENATVS B.L. FECIT has in the past meant that these prints have been attributed to René Boyvin. However, the placing of this lettering in relation to the stippled background on that part of the plate suggests that it was added after the plate had been engraved.

Levron does not list this set in his catalogue of Boyvin's works, or illustrate it, although he does make reference to a little-known set of masks engraved by Boyvin after Angelo Veientano, lettered Renatus B fecit and dating from 1560, in the introductory text, p.25. This reference seems to be a misunderstanding of the set here. Robert-Dumesnil (vol. VIII, p. 16) cites the correct title of this set but appears never to have seen it.
Production
Plates 12,14-17 and 21 original plates. Plates 1-11,13,18-20,22-4 reversed copies of plates by Frans Huys (c. 1522-c.1562) after Cornelis Floris.
