Physical description

Panel of brocaded silk tapestry (kesi) with silk and gold thread. Made up of three large and two small panels bordered and joined together by strips of brocade of dark blue silk and gold thread with a pattern of dragon roundels and symbols, bound with black silk. Backed by dark-blue linen.

The top panel shows pinks and other flowers growing from rocks, with a dragonfly above, on a pale buff-coloured background. The small panel below has clouds on a red ground.

In the central panel two archers are shooting arrows at a man tied to a stake, watched by an old man seated outside a tent. This scene has an orange-coloured background. The small panel beneath has white clouds on a red ground.

The bottom panel has a red and orange vase containing narcissus and fungus, an incense burner, two bowls and a sword on a blue ground. An inscription in gold is woven at the right side.

Woven in five gold characters on the right with the narcissus in the vase. May be interpreted as the hall which makes one understand Truth [and] look at snow. The name of the hall which belonged to someone unknown.
