Engravings by Francesco Aquila, from the Raccolta di Vasi, published in Rome by Domenico de Rossi
De Rossi's publication showed both modern and ancient marble vases. The well-known antique examples shown here were in the Villa d'Este at Tivoli, the Villa Lanti, and the churches of San Lorenzo and San Cecilia in Rome.
E. 1527.A.209, 214, 217, 221 - 1885. |
Object history | Shown here are the Medici and Borghese vases (see case). They were the most famous antique marble vases between 1650 and 1850 and were much copied, often as companions. The Borghese vase, now in the Louvre, is a first century AD work, probably made in Athens. (from label text for E.1527.A.193, 194, 210, 219-1885) |
Production | From the Raccolta di Vasi. |
