Two-handled vase and cover, with pâte-sur-pâte decoration of classical figures around the body of the vase. Beneath this, a deep band of gadrooning painted with individual blue and gilt flowers and leaves on a dark blue ground. A band of grey-blue and gilt art nouveau flowers on a white ground is painted around the foot of the vase and the rim of the cover.

Physical description
Two-handled vase and cover, with pâte-sur-pâte decoration of classical figures around the body of the vase. Beneath this, a deep band of gadrooning painted with individual blue and gilt flowers and leaves on a dark blue ground. A band of grey-blue and gilt art nouveau flowers on a white ground is painted around the foot of the vase and the rim of the cover.

'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900' The Paris designer, artist, patron and retailer François-Eugène Rousseau exhibited pâte-sur-pâte decorated porcelain at the international exhibition held in Paris in 1867. He advertised himself as displaying "decorated porcelain; fancy earthenware; enamels" and it is possible that this grand example may have been included. It was bought directly from him, two years later, in 1869.(1987-2006)

This grand example of Rousseau's use of the pâte-sur-pâte technique may have been included in the international exhibition held in Paris in 1867. It was bought directly from him in 1869.
