8 COSTUME DESIGN FOR CASSE NOISETTE (THE NUTCRACKER) 1938 Benois saw the original production of The Nutcracker in St Petersburg in 1892. In all the productions he supervised, he endeavoured to make the characters more consistent with Hoffmann’s original story. The costume design shows the ugly nutcracker which has grown to human size to battle with the mice. The soldier’s mask, with its large teeth, is removed for his transformation into the Prince.
