Unlike her art school peers, Jean Muir learned her trade in the fashion industry. During the 1950s and 60s she worked for Liberty, Jaeger, and her own label, Jane & Jane, before launching her brand under her own name, in 1966.
Jean Muir was very much part of the Swinging Sixties fashion scene, but her clothes were instant classics; distinctive and strong yet very subtle. As this suede dress worn by the eminent fashion journalist Ernestine Carter demonstrates, Muir's designs celebrated the sculptural qualities of fine fabrics and strong colours.

| Physical description | Dress of purple suede with long shirt sleeves and a high stand up collar which fastens with one button. The front has pin tucks to just above the waist and the tops of the sleeves are also pin tucked. The dress front fastens with a long zip. The back has a centre 'Kick' pleat and the hem is formed by an additional band of suede, top stitched into position and stiffened inside. The lining is purple. |
