Shaving cloth of hand-drawn mordant- and resist-dyed cotton (chintz). The floral meander border is curved at the top to fit the user's neck, but the cloth has never been cut. The field is mostly plain, but there is a central floral spray, two floral sprays in the field and a row of floral swags at the bottom of the field.

The initials 'R.L.' are embroidered in black near one of the corners.

Physical description
Shaving cloth of hand-drawn mordant- and resist-dyed cotton (chintz). The floral meander border is curved at the top to fit the user's neck, but the cloth has never been cut. Origins of Chintz Cat. 103 entry: Robert Lennox, whose initials are worked in corss-stitch with black silk in the upper left corner, was Deputy Governor of Fort Marlborough (Sumatra) 1736-44. He resigned the service in 1745-1746 in Madras, and returned to England before 1754.
Production
The initials R. L. embroidered on the cloth are those of Robert Lennox who left the army in Madras in 1745-6, and returned to England before 1754.
