Palampore

ca. 1730 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The coat-of-arms in the centre and the corners of this chintz bed-cover or hanging is that of J. C. Pielat (1692-1740), an official of the Dutch East India Company who returned to Holland from service in Sri Lanka in 1734. As is common with heraldic devices, there is a pun on Pielat's name with 'pied' or foot. The cranes at top and bottom of the field and in the centre are derived from Japanese motifs.
