Palampore

ca. 1700-1725 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Palampore (wall-hanging or bed-cover) of painted and dyed cotton chintz. In the centre is a coat-of-arms (unidentified) which is repeated in the four corners of the field. An all-over repeating design of fanciful leaves and flowers on trailing stems covers the field and the border.

Narrow guard borders are drawn to appear as figured tapes applied over the design. They have a repeated lobe-like leaf pattern. The palampore is composed of two selvage-to-selvage widths of cotton which have been joined after painting. There are three weft stripes across the top of the right-hand length, two composed of single shots and one of two shots of red cotton. Along all four edges there is a light blue band.
