Palampore
ca. 1720-1740 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This large hanging has a dense all-over design of flowering trees growing from small mounds at two edges of the field. Grapes, pomegranates and carnations combine with imaginary fruits and flowers. In the centre is an unidentified coat-of-arms with a crest representing Pegasus, who re-appears in the four corners of the field. The chintz has retained some of the surface shine produced by beating and burnishing, suggesting that it has never been washed.
