This large hanging has a dense all-over design of flowering trees growing from small mounds at two edges of the field. Grapes, pomegranates and carnations combine with imaginary fruits and flowers. In the centre is an unidentified coat-of-arms with a crest representing Pegasus, who re-appears in the four corners of the field. The chintz has retained some of the surface shine produced by beating and burnishing, suggesting that it has never been washed.

Physical description

A large rectangular palampore (wall-hanging or bed-cover) of painted and dyed cotton (chintz). In the centre is a coat-of-arms with four horse-shoes and a lozenge, with a Pegasus crest, which also appears in the four corners. The field is filled with branches bearing flowers and fruit: two branches rising from small mounds point towards the centre from each end of the field. The border has a design of smaller floral vines.
